The One Skill That Matters More Than AI in the AI Era

Most of my blog is dedicated to writing about AI. I truly believe it matters that much. A new era has opened, and those who cannot utilize AI will eventually be left behind by this massive shift. This is not just my personal opinion. It is the natural course of history whenever an industry's paradigm changes.

But today I am not here to tell you what everyone already knows. That AI is amazing and you need to use it. Paradoxically, I believe that to actually use AI better, you have to focus on something completely different first.

The Ultimate Leverage

Many people think AI is something incredibly special. I see it as simply another form of leverage.

A black-and-white historical photo of an industrial factory line, representing the evolution of leverage from human labor and machines to AI, emphasizing that the tool changes but the goal of amplifying core value remains the same.
AI is just the newest engine in a long line of tools built to amplify your core value

Before the Industrial Revolution, human labor was leverage. Afterward, machines took that role. In the AI era, AI has merely become the new form of leverage. Of course, AI does have one genuinely special trait. Unlike human labor or physical machines, it does not require significant capital. This is exactly why people like Sam Altman predict the coming era of the one-person unicorn, a shift I broke down in How to Build a Solo Unicorn Business in the AI Era.

But aside from that single characteristic, AI is fundamentally no different from labor or machines. And the shared core of every form of leverage is this: it amplifies the original value.

Amplifying the Core Value

Because leverage amplifies, the original value is infinitely more important than the tool doing the amplifying.

Master your recipe before you build the engine to scale it

Think about a restaurant. The most important thing is making delicious food. Making it quickly or in large quantities comes second. You have to nail the taste first. Then you standardize the recipe. Then you automate it. In the past, that automation required human labor and machines. Now AI is simply taking their place.

This same step-by-step sequence applies to almost every field. Elon Musk follows this exact process before automating anything. He first defines the problem. Second, he removes the unnecessary parts. Third, he accelerates and optimizes. Only after completing all of that does he automate.

Solopreneurs need to move in the exact same direction. Find a product that genuinely satisfies customers, which means you must Stop Chasing Marketing Hacks And Start Improving Your Core Value. Discover a marketing strategy that actually works. Automation comes after that, not before.

The Demon of the Average

Before you order AI to do anything, you have to become an expert yourself first.

Here is the truth. AI is the demon of the average. It learns from all the data available on the internet. So when you just tell it to "do this for me," it spits out the average value floating around on the web.

But in business, being average means failure. We are all in slightly different markets, targeting slightly different customers. The average answer AI provides can never truly satisfy your specific audience.

You have to bump into reality yourself and collect real data from the field. If it is YouTube, you need to know exactly which words your target audience reacts to. If it is a product, you need to know which features your customers actually use the most.

Feeding the Winning Pattern

The most important thing is to first create your own winning pattern, your own proven structure. Once you have that, you automate the pattern.

And automating a proven pattern is actually much easier than most people think. When you load successful data into AI and tell it to mimic that data, it does an unbelievably good job. So the real task is not blindly commanding it to "do this." You throw it a successful structure and proven references, and let it work from there.

For example, instead of telling AI to "write in a good style," gather texts and styles you genuinely think are great, feed that data in, and you will have a much higher probability of getting exactly what you want.

The problem is that most people have no idea what actually works. They do not know what a good structure looks like. They just ask AI to do it and hope for the best. Naturally, AI throws back the average value it found somewhere on the internet.

That is why becoming an expert yourself and acquiring good data has to come first. Then you use AI based on that high-quality foundation.

A lot of people talk about how incredible AI is and try to use it for everything right away. But rather than begging AI for all the answers, become the expert in your own field first. Build the systematized structure. Then let AI unleash its full potential inside the playground you created.

Remembering this is the single most important thing you can do in this rapidly changing era.
