Our lives are a continuous chain of decisions. I had to choose what business to pursue, but even deciding to start a business in the first place was a massive choice on its own. Once that decision is made, an infinite number of new ones unfold. How to build your landing page. What to name your brand. Everyone is handed a unique set of choices tailored to their specific situation, and we have to navigate them with care.
We constantly agonize over whether to choose Option A or Option B. The choice becomes exponentially harder when both options feel completely identical in value.
Naval Ravikant, often called the philosopher of Silicon Valley, uses a specific mental model whenever he faces this exact dilemma.
"If you cannot decide between two choices, take the path that is more difficult and more painful in the short term. What's actually going on is one of these choices has short-term pain and the other has long-term pain. Your brain is trying to push off the short-term pain. But if the two choices are relatively equal, yet one has short-term pain, it means that one has long-term gain. And because of the way compounding works, the long-term gain is what you want to optimize for anyway."
Our brains are fundamentally wired to ignore long-term benefits and focus entirely on immediate rewards. So if two options feel identical despite one being visibly harder and more painful, the actual value of that difficult path is significantly higher than your brain is letting you believe.
When the choices feel equal, always choosing the harder road will inevitably yield far greater value.
Stripe Built a $63 Billion Empire by Choosing the Hard Path
This mental model applies to any field. If you have several business ideas on the table, choose the one that looks the most challenging.

Stripe is a prime example. The payment infrastructure company is currently valued at around $63 billion, and its founder Patrick Collison got there by intentionally fighting head-on against the exact things other companies avoided because they were too difficult: regulation, security, and infrastructure. That brutal difficulty became Stripe's ultimate moat, preventing anyone else from easily entering the space. Why I Went Back to Square One
This same mental model applies when learning a new skill. I am currently building a web service to offer my own solutions. Web development was entirely new to me, and because of AI, I admittedly underestimated it at first. This was especially true when the vibe coding trend was at its peak.

But once I actually started coding while leaning heavily on AI, something shifted. It stopped feeling like I was directing the AI. It started feeling like the AI was controlling me.
As the features expanded and the codebase grew slightly more complex, the entire project began turning into an absolute mess. So I went right back to square one. I started studying operating systems and computer architecture completely from scratch. I chose it because it seemed like the most difficult path, which meant it was also the most valuable one.
I realized that to truly understand modern web development, I needed at least a baseline understanding of where data is physically stored and how my code actually executes under the hood. Every instinct I had was screaming to build flashy new things with AI right away and skip the dry textbooks. But I knew with certainty that building this intellectual foundation would yield massive, compounding benefits in the long run.
So if you are stuck between two choices and genuinely unsure which path to take, choose the harder one. That painful, difficult path holds infinitely more value for your long-term success than your brain is willing to admit right now.
